See exactly how many months until you hit your target — interest included
💡 Why This Matters Whether it's a down payment, a vacation, or a new car, a savings goal without a real timeline is just a wish. This calculator turns your target amount into an exact number of months, accounting for interest your savings earn along the way.
Even a modest interest rate compounds meaningfully over a savings goal's timeline — on a multi-year goal, a high-yield savings account can shave real months off the finish line compared to a standard low-interest account, just from letting your balance earn on itself.

Starting from your current savings, the calculator adds your monthly contribution each month and applies your account's interest rate (compounded monthly) to the running balance, repeating until the total reaches your goal. This is more accurate than simply dividing the remaining amount by your monthly contribution, since it accounts for interest doing some of the work for you over time.
The months figure is your real timeline to the goal, not counting any windfalls or extra contributions. "You'll contribute" shows the total you'll personally put in — the difference between that and your final balance is what interest added along the way. On longer timelines with a decent interest rate, that gap can be meaningfully larger than on a quick, short-term goal.
This assumes a perfectly steady monthly contribution and a constant interest rate — real life has both variance and, for savings accounts, rates that can change over time. Treat the output as a solid estimate to plan around, not a guaranteed date. If your contribution amount is likely to grow (a raise, a bonus plan), your real timeline will likely be shorter than what's shown here.
If the timeline feels too long, the calculator makes the tradeoffs concrete: increasing the monthly contribution shortens it directly, and moving your savings to a higher-interest account shortens it too, especially on longer goals. Re-run the numbers whenever your contribution amount or interest rate changes so your target date stays accurate.
Example: A $10,000 goal, $1,000 already saved, $200/month contribution, at 4% annual interest. Month by month, interest compounds on the growing balance alongside your contributions — reaching the goal in 42 months, having personally contributed $8,400 (the rest came from interest).
Yes — enter your account's annual interest rate (like a high-yield savings account APY) and the calculator compounds it monthly along with your contributions. Leave it at 0% if you want a simple no-interest estimate.
Use your average over the last few months rather than your best or worst month. If your income varies a lot, running the numbers with a conservative (lower) monthly figure gives you a more realistic timeline.
Either can work — some people prefer focusing all extra savings on one goal at a time for faster progress and motivation, similar to the debt snowball method; others split contributions across several goals in parallel. Run this calculator separately for each goal to compare timelines.
